Out with the Old, in with the New

After 6 great years with my cute red Jetta, I decided it was time to move on and start looking for something new.

I had NO idea what car I wanted, but I had fun looking and dreaming.

The Jetta was great and I have many wonderful memories with that car.

But it was time to move on and buy a more grown up car.
I went back to Volkswagen and found this used 2008 Passat and fell in love.
I waited a week before buying it, and good thing I did because they dropped the price by $1600 after they insisted that they couldn't go any lower than the sticker price.
It was hard, but my patience paid off...
This is my first real grown up purchase and I am so excited.

My Birthday AKA "Queens Day"

When we planned this trip, we originally thought we would spend 3 days in Amsterdam and then leave and go to Belgium for the last 2 days. We wanted to see Belgium but also knew that the biggest national holiday of the year was on April 30th, also the same day of my 29th birthday. This holiday is appropriately called
"Queens Day"

All we knew about this day was that everything was closed - which to us meant, no shopping, no site seeing, and no eating out. We were unaware of what actually went on during this day, but as our vacation got closer and more people found out that we were going to be there, everyone had great things to say about it and told us to stay - which we did!!
All I can say about "Queens Day" is it is complete and total insanity for 24 hours straight. Let me explain, the national color for the Dutch is Orange. So on this day everyone is dressed in the most ridiculous head-to-toe outfits all in orange!! It is like one BIG block party through out the whole city and on all the canals. Music was blaring from every boat and every open window, alcohol was being guzzled and pot was being smoked. If you have problems with claustrophobia, this is not the day for you.

Getting ready to set out for the day in our Orange Outfits.

Most streets were this busy if not busier and a sea of Orange.

The canals were packed with Orange Boats filled with party people.

And some boats were just decorated pretty.

When I said dressed in Orange from head-to-toe I really meant it! :)

This was definitely a memorable birthday.
I am thinking a destination birthday is a must from now on, but how does one beat having her own national holiday??
ummmm....
Paris?? Amalfi Coast?? Costa Rica??

April in AMSTERDAM

On the Sunday after Grandpa's Birthday, Mom and I flew to Amsterdam to visit Krista and Brian. It also happened to be my 29th Birthday as well as the biggest national holiday in Holland "Queens Day" (More on that later)

We arrived and immediately became tourist and had a blast.

We took a hop-on-hop-off canal tour around the city. We lucked out, it was a georgous day. Along the way we hopped off the boat and visited a few very popular attractions/museums.

The first stop was at the Anne Frank House...so amazing!

We met up with Krista and Brian and all went to the Heineken Brewery. Even though I am not a huge fan of beer, we felt we had to have the "Heineken Experience" (it has been under renovation for the past 8 months) so it was brand new and actually pretty fun.

Krista and I couldn't resist the corny picture

Mom HATES Beer, but was a trooper and took a sip :)

Krista and Brian are true Beer Lovers and such a cute couple.

Washington St & Grandpa's 94th B-day

For the past couple years we have gone up to the Northwest for my Grandpa's birthday, which also happens to be 4 days before mine.
Mom, Dad, Estelle and I flew up to Portland on Friday Morning. We met up with Tyler and took Farley to Wintler Park on the Columbia River and played fetch. Tyler drove us into Portland and showed us his new office.

Friday night we had dinner in Camas at Aunt Jill & Uncle Larry's house.
It was great to all be together.

This year my Grandpa was turning 94.
So we all gathered in Ridgefield at the house he grew up in.

The Engblom-Styker clan was not able to make it to the party because of a bad cold going around. However we were able to visit with them before we left.
